Popular science strives to project an image of perfection based on greater understanding of human biochemistry. However for every step forward in this extraordinarily complex area of investigation, there are several steps backwards. Whilst the idea of a disease-free human society is a noble one, it is often overshadowed by disasters such as thalidomide.
