In some regards GM plants may be seen as an extension of the process of interbreeding and cross-pollination carried out for decades by botanists. However, in traditional techniques there is not generally the possibility of inadvertently creating new 'super-strains' which have wide ranging and detrimental effects on the surrounding ecology.
